" Coupe DeVilla " Fat Fender 40 and SwoopCoupe

When I first started Customizing the majority of my work was done modifying HW's, stretching them, widening fenders, or turning them into what I thought they should look like.
Nowadays I enjoy working with Graphics and creating Decals and special cards for accompanying my Customs.

Here's one of my favorite pieces from a few years back,

Here's a meld of the Fat Fender 40 and the SwoopCoupe I call the "Coupe-DeVilla".

Chassis and base from the SwoopCoupe and body from the Fat Fender 40.

Wheels from Muscle Machine Tuners.
Interior from Johnny Ltng '53 Buick Riviera.
Dash had to be sectioned, puttied, sanded and painted.
All windows on the 40 are enlarged and/or reshaped.
Rear fenders extended 3/16" to add length and shape.
Front and rear chrome windshield trim.

Front windows created with Micro Glaze a liquid "make your own windows" product.

A jewelers saw was used to remove fenders and stock from the lower front of the FF40 and also the fenders from the rear so it would drop down on the SwoopCoupe chassis.

Just a tad of Quik Steel was added to the nose of the FF 40 to bring it out and over the SwoopCoupe grill.

Thin Brass strips and Quik Steel is used to fill in the small gaps between body and chassis.

1/64 Gold tape for body trim.

Lots of sanding and priming and sanding and priming.

Darkened Planet Green is shot over Grey Primer.
A very thin Candy Orange with Spring Green Pearl-Ex Powder is shot over the Planet Green.
Clearcoated with HOK Urethane Enamel Clear.

All Products Used Are Exclusively House Of Kolor, Of Course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The junction of the original castings is very smoth, congratulations!

The final color is SUPERB! Great feeling - and great inks, of course...

By the way, as it seems you always use top products... What brand of airbrush do you use?

Thanks Everyone.
Thanks mf_anjos,
I own a few different AirBrushes.
I use my Badger Anthem 155 for Primer and for Clearcoat because it has a larger needle size, .5mm, it is my workhorse.
I use my Iwata HP-CS for Basecoats and ColorCoats because the Iwata has superb atomization.
I also own the Iwata HP-B, the new Paasche Talon, and Badger LG100

My first 3 or 4 years, 2000 to 2004, I used very cheap paints that I removed from Aerosol cans and sprayed with a cheap Paasche H Single action AirBrush.
Around 2005 I purchased a Badger Anthem 155 and was amazed at how much better it was than the Paasche H I had been using all along.
Then around 2007 I purchased my first Iwata AirBrush and was again even more surprised at how much better it was than the Badger.

For our purposes of Customizing 1/64 Scale DieCast I always recommend the Badger Anthem 155 for people beginning AirBrushing.
It is inexpensive and will do everything you need it to.
It is also a very durable AirBrush.

In 2005 I broke away from the regular Convention Customizing scene and began making my Customs in large runs (50 - 100) for Companies, Conventions, Movie Premieres and other Events.
I also began doing some work with the House of Kolor paint company showing their paints and products at DieCast Conventions and Car Shows.
I like House Of Kolor because of their bright rich colors and how quickly their paint dries.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience, CadillacPat.

In fact, I intend to start playing with customs in a near future.

As I am an architect (that cares a lot about detailing), I want to start doing the right thing, and use my spare time to make "perfect" jobs, following a previous project. I did a couple of customs using aerosol cans two years ago and I was kind of frustrated with the poor results, besides the hard job it demands...

Nowadays I'm doing a Master on Architecture so there isn't time at all... But I saved all your tips to help me when I can make it possible! I understand that if I spend some extra bucks I'll be happier with the results I'll be able to get!

Have a great weekend! 8-)

Marcelo

Thanks for the good words Everyone,

Thanks Marcelo,
Good luck with your Masters,
Yes it is very difficult to attain great results with Aerosol Cans on DieCast, especially when doing tape jobs and 2 or 3-tones.
An AirBrush and Compressor is definitely the way to go to get control over paint flow.

Yes, that's the way to go. And the worst problem was exactly with tape jobs!

Here are some of them with minimum acceptable results...

Matchbox Bus - gold and flat black, Dairy Delivery TH wheels:

- '55 Chevy Panel - same colors, Jada wheels:

- '67 Camaro - metallic blue, white interior, Ultra Hots wheels and Overbored 454 plastic engine (all done without a Dremel...)

- Matchbox Beetle - same colors, Ultra Hots Wheels. The white color was an inferior ink brand and the results from mask tape were awful... Tried to do the same (two-color painting) with a VW Bus but I gave up... :D

That was 2 years ago. I´ll try later, with the right tools and using decals too....
